Freud explains that being in love is the most vulnerable state a person can find themselves in. It is evident that his mind reels on with thoughts of Clementine being unfaithful. When Clementine is away, Joel’s thoughts consume him. The first time they fall in love is simply the two applying a palliative measure to alleviate the loneliness they are experiencing, but as Freud warns, weakness takes over. Throughout the movie, Joel and Clementine fall in love three separate times: the first time upon their initial meeting, the second time in Joel’s dreams, and the third after meeting a second time. However, he is also clear to point out that there is great weakness in strong love. He suggests that falling in love would be the one way to ultimately escape suffering. Falling in Love:įreud defines falling in love as one of the best methods of distraction from suffering. And, by doing so, he finds himself neglecting all of Clementine’s negative aspects and begins to fall in love with her again. In Joel’s dreams and imagination, he efficiently avoids any conflicts that would inevitably occur in real life. In this way, Joel finds himself idealizing Clementine by imagining her in a strictly positive light. Through his dreams, he is also able to imagine Clementine helping him escape the procedure to remove the memories of her. In Joel’s dreams, he is capable of reminiscing over the pleasant experiences he shared with Clementine.
